DESCRIPTION:

Brasov Philharmonic and Conducting Teacher Dumitru Goia offer an intensive week-long course in orchestral conducting. Limited to only a small number of active participants (8-12), the master class guarantees each participant 80 minutes of full orchestra podium exposure, including public performance, in addition to 2 hours of conducting practicum with piano duo, and extensive score study. The All-Tchaikovsky program includes Serenade for Strings, Piano Concerto No. 1, and Francesca da Rimini. The course provides a great opportunity to not only work with a world-class orchestra and teacher, but also to produce professional-quality videos, in rehearsal and concert. The program will be able to accommodate aspiring and practicing conductors at all stages of experience.


LOCATION:

The medieval city of Brasov is a major cultural center of Transylvania. Situated 166 km north of Bucharest, the city is the seventh most populous city in Romania, a central transportation hub, and a popular tourist destination in Europe.

REPERTOIRE:

All-Tchaikovsky:
• Serenade for Strings, Op. 48
• Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-Flat Minor, Op. 23
Francesca da Rimini: Symphonic Fantasy After Dante, Op. 32

Participants have the opportunity to rehearse any part of the program. Maestro Goia will make final assignments for the performance.

SCHEDULE:

3 July -- Arrival in Brasov, Romania

4 - 6 July -- Piano Sessions and Score Study: daily 2 x 3-hr sessions with piano duo; additional score study and optional technique sessions with Huang and Goia

7 - 9 July -- Orchestra Sessions: minimum 3 x 4-hr sessions with full orchestra; additional sight-seeing excursions possible to nearby Poiana Brasov and Bran (Dracula's) Castle

10 July -- Dress Rehearsal and Concert: All participants will receive video and audio recordings (raw or edited) from front and back, as well as a large publicity poster.

11 July -- Departure.

COST:

The cost includes all tuition and professional recording fees. Accommodation, meals, and travel are arranged separately. ICM will arrange economical transport arrangements between Bucharest airports and Brasov.

Tuition and Application Fee -- $1500.00 USD
Passive Participant Tuition -- 100 Euro, due upon arrival.

A deposit of $300.00 USD is due by 1 June, 2016. Deposits will be refunded only if the withdrawing participant's place is filled by another participant.

Currently enrolled graduate students in conducting are eligible for a limited number of financial assistance discounts of 10%-20%. Please contact us for details.

ROOM AND BOARD:

Lodging and meals are paid separately by the participants, but are extremely economical. ICM will arrange half-board packages (breakfast and lodging, single occupancy), estimated at 30-50 Euro/day, at the historic Hotel Coroana, in the middle of the vibrant pedestrian zone. 

ELIGIBILITY:

This master class is open to all conductors. There is no upper age limit. Applicants of varying levels of training and experience will be considered. A maximum of 12 applicants will be selected to participate.

3.  Deposit of $300.00 USD must be paid by 1 June, 2016

4.  Final payment must be made by 13 June, 2016
